Distribution:
Habitat: on humus, soil near bogs or streams, also on rocks, rotten wood, or tree trunks in forests or alpine bushes; alt. 1200–4600 m.
Distribution: China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Bhutan, Nepal, Sikkim, Russia, Europe, and North America.

1. Ptilium crista-castrensis (Hedw.) De Not.   毛梳藓   mao shu xian
Cronac. Briol. Ital. 2: 17. 1867. Ctenium cristacastrensis (Hedw.) Jens., Danmarks Mosser 2: 122. 1923. Hypnum crista-castrensis Hedw., Sp. Musc. Frond. 287. 1801. Type: Europe.
 
Plants pale green or yellowish green, somewhat glossy, in dense mats. Stems prostrate, 5–15 cm long, densely pinnately branched, branches flattened; pseudoparaphyllia narrowly lanceolate. Stem leaves and branch leaves dimorphic; stem leaves broadly ovate-triangular, 2–3 mm × 0.8–1.2 mm, gradually acuminate, strongly squarrose or curled; margins serrulate above; costae double, reaching up to midleaf; leaf cells linear; alar cells few, only consisting of several quadrate or shortly rectangular cells; branch leaves narrowly ovate-lanceolate, falcate-secund, costae not distinct. Dioicous. Setae reddish brown, 1.5–2.5 cm long; capsules inclined to horizontal, oblong-ovoid, 2.0–2.5 mm long, arcuate when dry; opercula conic, bluntly and shortly rostrate; annuli 1–2 rows of cells; peristome teeth normal. Calyptrae not seen. Spores not seen.
