general taxon notes:
Brotherus (1929) reported Pylaisiella extenta from Yuenyan county, Sichuan province along with P. falcata var. recurvatula. Ando (1978) and B. C. Tan et al. (1995) also reported it from Yunnan and Xinjiang provinces, respectively. These reports cannot be verified.

Pylaisiella falcata (Schimp. in B.S.G.) Ando var. recurvatula (Broth.) Ando, Phyta 1: 19. 1978. Stereodon subfalcatus (Schimp. in B.S.G.) var. recurvatulus Broth., Symb. Sin. 4: 123. 1929. Type: China. Sichuan (Setschwan), Yuenyan Co., Handel-Mazzetti 2327.
 
Species features of this species are very similar to those of Pylaisia polyantha (Hedw.) Schimp. in B.S.G. Pylaisia extenta differs from P. polyantha in having distinctly recurved leaf margins, longer leaf cells (50–60 µm), loosely arranged leaves that are erect or slightly falcate-secund, and more or less plicate.
