general taxon notes:
This species is close to P. selwynii Kindb., but differs in having more loosely matted and less branched stems, fewer alar cells of leaves, and the endostome segments completely free from adherence to the exostome teeth.

Plants rather small, green or yellowish green, somewhat glossy, in mats. Stems creeping, irregularly or subpinnately branched, leafy branches subjulaceous, densely foliate, often curved when dry. Leaves dense, appressed when dry, erect spreading when moist, ovate-lanceolate, slightly concave, slenderly acuminate, 0.9–1.4 mm × 0.3–0.5 mm; margins entire or only serrulate near the apex; costae double, short; leaf cells elongate-rhomboidal; alar cells few, quadrate, in 5–8 rows along the margins. Autoicous. Setae straight, reddish brown, 6–10 mm long; capsules erect, cylindrical, 1.3–2.0 mm long; opercula conic, shortly rostrate; annuli developed; peristome double; exostome teeth narrowly lanceolate, yellowish brown, cross-striolate at base, papillose above on the dorsal surface; endostome segments slenderly lanceolate as long as or somewhat longer than the teeth, not adherent to the teeth, keeled, not perforate, papillose, split near apex; basal membrane low; cilia absent. Spores yellowish green, 13–18 µm in diameter, minutely papillose.
