Plants small to medium-sized, green to yellowish green, brown when old, forming interwoven patches. Stems creeping, up to 10 mm long, regularly pinnately branched, branches ca. 5 mm long; central strand present; paraphyllia lanceolate, mostly on stems and rarely on branches. Stem leaves concave, gradually tapering from ovate to widely ovate base to a slender lanceolate apex; leaf margins revolute or plane, serrate; costa stout, often excurrent; median leaf cells quadrate to rhomboidal, 5–25 µm wide, thick-walled, projecting at upper ends; apical leaf cells narrow, rhomboidal, smooth; branch leaves ovate to narrowly ovate at base, with a short or long lanceolate apex. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves entire at the margin. Setae 3–4 cm long, orange-red; opercula conical; peristome similar to H. microphyllum (Hedw.) Broth.
