Plants small to medium-sized, dark green to slightly brownish, in loose patches. Stems procumbent, up to 7 cm long, usually irregularly pinnately branched; branches 2–5 cm long; central strand differentiated; paraphyllia numerous, lanceolate, apical cells truncate. Stem leaves incurved when dry, up to or more than 1 mm long, ovate, widely ovate to triangular, lanceolate, delicately somewhat plicate; margins serrate; costa percurrent or slightly excurrent, slightly setulosely papillose; median leaf cells rhomboidal to oblong, thick-walled, unipapillose or strongly projecting at the upper ends, ca. 5–15 µm wide; branch leaves ovate to oblong-ovate, with triangular apex; costa 2/3 the leaf length. Perichaetial leaves ovate-lanceolate, multiplicate; margins entire. Setae elongate; capsules cylindrical, slightly arcuate; peristome features the same as those of H. microphyllum. Spores nearly spherical, finely papillose.
