Plants large, usually robust, soft, light green or yellowish green, pale green when dry, somewhat glossy, in loose mats. Main stems up to 15 cm long, erect-spreading or ascending, loosely and irregularly bipinnately branched; stems and branches orange-red. Stem leaves usually not closely foliate, 2.5–3.2 mm long, cordate-ovate or round at base, slenderly acuminate, not plicate, squarrose or reflexed at apex, clearly sheathing at base; margins serrulate above, moderately serrulate below; costae 1/4 the leaf length; leaf cells linear, thin-walled, smooth; alar cells somewhat inflated, pale-white, oblong; branch leaves smaller, usually densely arranged, not patent. Setae 17–33 mm long; capsules 1.8–2.5 mm long; cilia 3. Spores 11–17 µm in diameter, papillose.
