The papillae of leaf cells, the marginal serration, and the leaf apices of this species are highly variable. Sometimes, the leaf cells, especially those of the ventral leaves, become smooth when this species grows in wet or very shady habitat.

Plants mat-forming, light yellow, dark green to dark brown. Stems 3–5 cm long. Leaves ovate to oblong-lanceolate, 1.5–2.0 mm × 0.4–0.7 mm, broadly acute to abruptly acuminate, at times mucronate; costae double, strong, reaching leaf apex, protruding abaxially forming a spine or a lamella distally; laminal cells oval-hexagonal, 13–22 µm wide, moderately thick-walled, becoming smaller apically, rectangular and oblong basally, 22–35(–45) µm × 13–16 µm, unipapillose in dorsal and lateral leaves, often smooth in ventral leaves. Setae 1–2 cm long; capsules ovoid-cylindrical, 1.0–1.5 mm long. Spores 15–18 µm in diameter.
