This species is very close to Claopodium aciculum, but differs by having larger plants and leaves.

Plants medium-sized, up to 10 cm long, dark green to yellowish green, brownish at base when old, in spreading mats. Stems delicate, creeping, irregularly pinnately branched; branches 3–5 mm long; central strand present; paraphyllia foliose, sparse. Stem leaves and branch leaves similar; stem leaves appressed or slightly revolute when dry, erect-spreading when moist, ovate-lanceolate, up to 1 mm long; margins serrate; costa single, percurrent; leaf cells hexagonal, unipapillose, median cells 5.0–7.5 µm × 5.0 µm, thin-walled. Dioicous. Dwarf male plants on the leaves of female plants. Perichaetial leaves ovate-lanceolate, serrate at the apex, costa short, inconspicuous. Setae slender, reddish brown to yellowish brown, 1–2 cm long, smooth; capsules ovoid, horizontal or cernuous, exothecium cells rectangular to hexagonal; peristome double; exostome teeth yellowish brown, more than 0.5 mm long, papillose above; endostome segment nearly as long as the teeth, lightly yellowish, finely papillose; basal membrane about 1/2 the height of segments, cilia usually 2. Spores about 15 µm in diameter, finely papillose.
