This species is characterized by the very small plants that are only about 0.75 cm high.

Dendrocyathophorum intermedium Herz., J. Hattori Bot. Lab. 14: 65. 1955, nom. inval.
 
Plants small, yellowish-green. Primary stems prostrate, rhizoids short, tomentose; secondary stems erect, usually simple; branches ca. 7.5 mm long, 0.8 mm wide, terminal of branches tail-like; clusters of filamentous gemmae sometimes present at tops of branches, gemmae about 0.5 mm long. Lateral leaves ovate-lanceolate, asymmetric, ca. 2.6 mm × 1 mm, apex long acuminate; leaf margins slightly serrate above; amphigastria ovate-lanceolate, symmetric, ca. 1.4 mm × 0.9 mm; costa single, short, weak, often forked at the apex; laminal cells irregularly rhomboidal, becoming shortly rhomboidal toward leaf base; leaf margins bordered by 2 rows of elongate cells near base.
