Notes     (Last Modified On 3/23/2009)
general taxon notes:

Hookeria acutifolia is easily identified by its large, net-like leaf areolation, mostly without a leaf border. Leaf apical propagules produced by a few, shortly oval laminal cells are unique. In Mainland China, the distribution of this species occurs mostly south of the Yangtze River. Plants from Taiwan populations are larger than their mainland and Hainan counterparts.

Plants soft, complanate, in pale green mats. Stems 2–3(–5) cm long, simple or branched, prostrate on ground, in cross section with nearly homogeneous parenchyma cells with a slightly differentiated central strand. Leaves heteromorphic, forming irregular rows; dorsal leaves symmetrical, lateral leaves asymmetrical, slightly wrinkled when dry, flattened when wet, ovate, broadly lanceolate to lanceolate, 4–7 mm × 4 mm, broadly acute to acuminate, often radiculose at the leaf tips, borders not differentiated or weakly differentiated with only one row of longer cells; costa none; leaf cells large, hyaline, oval-hexagonal to short rectangular, 94–188 µm × 40–60 µm, becoming shorter toward apex, thin-walled. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves smaller, ovate-lanceolate. Perigonia gemmiform. Setae long, 10–20 mm long, reddish brown to yellow, smooth; capsules oblong-ovoid, horizontal to pendulous, 1–2 mm long; opercula long rostrate; exostome teeth lanceolate, striate below, papillose above; endostome segments as long as the exostome, basal membrane high. Calyptrae mitriform. Spores 12–16 µm, slightly papillose.
