Hygrohypnum poecilophyllum Dixon, Rev. Bryol. Lichénol. 7: 113. 1934. Type: China. Manchuria, Prov. Ryonei, Mt. Koo, Kobayasi 3907 (holotype BM).
Plants medium-sized, purple or yellowish above, yellowish green or dark green below, glossy, in caespitose mats. Stems prostrate, to 3–5 cm long, with few leaves or denuded in older parts, irregularly branched; stem elliptical in cross section; cortical cells in 3–4 layers; central strand weakly differentiated; pseudoparaphyllia few, foliose. Stem leaves falcate-secund, ovate to elongate-ovate, ca. 1.5 mm × 0.7 mm, concave, with a short apex; margins entire, serrulate above; costae short, double; median leaf cells vermicular, 70–80 mm × 3–4 mm, thick-walled, porose; alar cells enlarged, thick-walled, forming a sharply delimited group. Autoicous. Inner perichaetial leaves elongate, ca. 4 mm × 0.6 mm, plicate; costae short, double or absent. Setae 15–20 mm long, reddish brown; capsules reddish brown, ovoid to elongate-ovoid, patent, strongly curved; annuli absent; endostome segments finely papillose, narrowly carinate; cilia 2–3, longer than the segments, nodulose. Spores 15–30 mm in diameter, papillose.
