This variety differs from Sphagnum junghuhnianum var. junghuhnianum in having the following features: 1) plants softer and slenderer, whitish green to yellowish brown in loose tufts; 2) branches often in fascicles of 3–4, with 2–3 spreading; 3) stem and branch leaves smaller [stem leaves ca. 1.0 mm long (vs. 1.8 mm long) and branch leaves less than 1.3 mm long (vs. 1.5–2.0 mm long)]; stem hyaline cortical cells usually without pores or rarely with a large, single pore in certain cells; and 4) hyaline cells of stem leaves generally lacking pores and membrane pleats, or sometimes only lower hyaline cells with few pores on the ventral surface.
