Plants large to robust, in loose tufts. Primary stems prostrate, with dense, brownish rhizoids; secondary stems erect, 7–10 cm high, densely foliate above. Leaves crisped when dry, spreading when moist, narrowly rounded-ovate, oblong-ligulate or obovate, more or less undulate, narrowed and decurrent at base, abruptly acute or obtuse at apex; margins distinctly bordered by 2–4 rows of elongate cells, serrate throughout, with 1-celled teeth; costae percurrent or ending below the apex; leaf cells small, hexagonal or rounded, walls thickened at corners. Dioicous. Setae clustered, 3–4 cm long; capsules elongate-ovoid, inclined to pendulous; opercula rostrate.
