Habitat: on rotten wood, tree trunks or rocks in forests; alt. 1400–3600 m.
Distribution: China, Japan, Korea, Europe, and North America.

general taxon notes:
This species is similar to Herzogiella seligeri in leaf shape, but differs in having shorter capsules (ca. 2.0 mm long) and complanate branches. The capsules are ca. 3.0 mm long, and the branches are not complanate in H. seligeri.

Plants slender or rather robust, green or yellowish green, glossy. Stems prostrate, 2–4 cm long, slenderly terete, curved, radiculose, irregularly branched, branches 5–10 mm long, arcuate; in stem cross section epidermal cells thin-walled. Leaves more or less complanate, rarely secund, 1.2–2.2 mm × 0.4–0.6 mm, ovate- or oblong-lanceolate, slenderly acuminate, concave at base; margins serrulate above, crenulate below; costae double, short or indistinct; median leaf cells narrowly rhomboidal, 45–80 µm × 4–6 µm, thin-walled; basal cells shorter; alar cells few, thin-walled, hyaline, rectangular or quadrate. Autoicous. Inner perichaetial leaves sheathing at base, recurved at margins above, abruptly slenderly acuminate, serrulate at apex. Setae slender, 1.5–2.0 cm long; capsules inclined or horizontal, shortly cylindrical, 1.5–2.0 mm long, symmetric, slightly arcuate; opercula conic, shortly rostrate; peristome double; exostome teeth narrowly lanceolate, cross-striate below on the outer surface, trabeculate on the inner surface; endostome segments linear-lanceolate, perforate; cilia 3, nodulose. Calyptrae cucullate. Spores 10–12 µm in diameter, yellowish brown, minutely papillose.
