Plagiothecium neckeroideum var. niitakayamae differs from P. neckeroideum var. neckeroideum by its more or less julaceous leafy stems and branches that are complanate-foliate, its symmetric leaves that are barely undulate, and its somewhat verrucose leaf cells.
