Plants rather large, usually dark green to reddish brown, glossy, in dense tufts. Stems erect, 2.5–4.0 cm high, often branched, sparsely foliate, with dense rhizoids. Leaves flexuous, undulate, broadly elliptical or rounded-elliptical, 4–7 mm × 3.0–4.5 mm, narrowed and not decurrent at base, rounded-obtuse at apex; margins entire, bordered by 1–2 rows of enlarged, obliquely rectangular cells; costae ending above mid-leaf, rarely reaching to the apex; leaf cells large, regularly pentagonal or hexagonal, thin-walled or slightly thickened at corners, juxtacostael cells usually larger, submarginal cells smaller. Dioicous. Setae solitary, ca. 2.5 cm long, straight; capsules ovoid-cylindrical, horizontal or pendulous.
