Plants medium-sized, dark green to brownish, in loose tufts. Stems erect, 1.5–2.0(–3.0) cm high, simple, rarely branched, with dense reddish brown rhizoids at base. Leaves crisped when dry, erect-spreading when moist, rounded-ovate, narrowed at base, gradually acute, slenderly apiculate at apex; margins narrowly bordered by 2–3 rows of rectangular to linear cells, double-toothed in the upper margins; costae reddish, percurrent, smooth at back; leaf cells small, irregularly rounded to rounded-quadrate, ca. 17 µm wide, clearly thick-walled at corners. Synoicous. Setae solitary, yellowish, 2.0–2.5 cm long; capsules elongate-ovoid to ellipsoidal, horizontal to pendulous; endostome segments perforate; cilia 3. Spores 20–30 µm in diameter, minutely papillose.
