Plants rather small, 0.5–2.0 cm high. Stems single. Leaves 2–5 mm long, strongly crisped when dry, erect-patent when moist, long-lingulate, with acuminate apex, spines obliquely arranged on the leaf back; margins bi-toothed, bordered by 1–2 rows of elongate cells; costa single, ending in the apex; lamellae 4–6 rows, 2–7 cells high; median leaf cells usually oblong, 12–16 µm wide; basal cells quadrate or rectangular. Dioicous. Capsules single, cylindrical, slightly curved; opercula conic, long beaked. Spores spherical, 12–30 µm in diameter, verrucose.
