Plants robust, light green, yellowish, or brownish, glossy, in loosely caespitose mats. Stems erect, irregularly branched; stem round or elliptical in cross section; cortical cells large, with distinct hyalodermis, central strand weakly differentiated; pseudoparaphyllia foliose. Stem leaves falcate-secund or hooked-secund, broadly ovate-lanceolate, 1.0–2.5 mm long, gradually acuminate; margins plane or slightly involute, entire or serrulate above; costae double, short; median leaf cells linear, thin-walled, 10–15 times as long as wide; alar cells abruptly enlarged, inflated, thin-walled, usually hyaline or often colored, numerous, forming a distinct, decurrent auricle, excavate. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves long, erect, plicate. Setae 25–40 mm long, reddish brown; capsules inclined or horizontal, curved, asymmetrical, 2–3 mm long; cilia 2–4. Spores 13–22 mm in diameter, finely papillose.
