Habitat: on tree trunks, rotten wood, rarely on rocks in forests; alt. 170–2600 m.

general taxon notes:
Hondaella caperata is similar to Campylodontium flavescens (Hook.) Bosch & Sande Lac. [= Mesonodon flavescens (Hook.) W. R. Buck] of the Entodontaceae, but it differs from the latter by the falcate-secund and plicate leaves with distinctive double costae.

Plants yellowish green or dark green, glossy, in dense tufts. Stems up to 2 cm long, prostrate or ascending, irregularly or subpinnately branched, usually 1–2 repeatedly branched, branches unequal, terete, sometimes flagelliform; in stem cross section outer cortical cells 2–3 rows, small, thick-walled; medullar cells enlarged, thin-walled; central strand slightly developed. Stem leaves dense, falcate-secund when dry, oblong-lanceolate, slenderly acuminate, plicate, 1.4–1.7 mm × 0.4–0.6 mm; margins entire; costae double, short, or indistinct; median leaf cells linear, thin-walled, smooth; alar cells numerous, quadrate, distinctly separated from laminal cells; branch leaves similar to stem leaves. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves lanceolate, slightly plicate, slenderly acuminate. Setae 1.0–1.2 cm long, yellowish brown; capsules erect, ellipsoid, 1.4–1.8 mm × 0.5–0.6 mm; opercula conic; peristome hypnoid; cilium 1. Spores 15–18 µm in diameter, minutely papillose.
