general taxon notes:

Thériot (1907) characterized this variety as having a short opercular beak. However, the type specimen was found to contain broken beaks. When compared to var. collenchymatosum, the leaves of var. brevirostratum have a much shorter apical mucro and a slightly narrower and less distinctive leaf border. Intermediate specimens between the two varieties sometimes exist. With its short leaf apical mucros, specimens of var. brevirostratum can be mistaken for D. maibarae. The latter species, however, has smaller leaf cells.
