Plants large, reddish, in loose mats. Secondary stems up to 2 cm long. Leaves erect-patent when dry, oblong-lanceolate to lanceolate, concave, acuminate; leaf margins plane, occasionally slightly involute, toothed beyond the midleaf; leaf cells falcate-linear, 45–70 mm long, thin- or incrassate-walled, not pitted, gradually becoming shorter upward; alar cells quadrate, numerous, forming a colored, concave group. Setae ca. 3 cm long, smooth; capsules large, ovoid to oblong-ovoid; exothecial cells semi-collenchymatous, with knob-like thickenings at corners and vertical walls; peristome hypnoid.
