Plants small to medium-sized, 3–15 mm high, often in clumps. Stems simple or branched; in stem cross section a central strand present. Leaves not or only slightly curled when dry, erect-spreading when moist, 4–12 mm × 0.1–0.2 mm, linear; acuminate at apex; leaf margins entire throughout, 3–5 rows in cross section; costa percurrent, somewhat obscure, almost homogeneous, stereid bands not clear; leaf cells unistratose at base, 4–8(–14) layers above; median cells rounded to quadrate, 4–6 µm in diameter, smooth; basal cells rectangular to somewhat oblong-ovate, 20–60 µm × 4–12 µm, hyaline, smooth. Axillary hairs 5–15 cells long. Dioicous or heteroicous. Perichaetia terminal; perichaetial leaves shorter than or equal to vegetative leaves, lanceolate or oblong, awn excurrent, smooth; entire below, ciliate or laciniate above. Setae short, to 0.3 mm long; capsules oblong-ovoid, obliquely asymmetric, 3–4 mm × 1–2 mm, abruptly narrowed at base, gradually narrowed at mouth; exothecial cells not collenchymatous; stomata at mouth of capsule; annuli well differentiated, consisting of 1–3 rows of thick-walled cells; opercula conic, to 1.0 mm long, obtuse, smooth; peristome present. Calyptrae campanulate, smooth. Spores spherical, 6–12 µm in diameter, papillose.
