Hierbas generalmente perennes, erectas o procumbentes. Hojas alternas (Mesoamérica). Inflorescencia racemosa o corimboso-paniculada. Flores axilares o terminales, blancas o amarillas; cáliz y corola 5(-6)-partidos; estambres 5(6), generalmente más cortos que la corola; anteras oblongas; ovario globoso u ovoide, generalmente 5-valvado. Aprox. 150 spp. Cosmopolita, en regiones templadas y subtropicales.

La única especie en Mesoamérica es Lysimachia steyermarkii.
