 COLLECTORS OF TROPICAL ANDEAN BRYOPHYTES

What we glean from travellers’ vivid descriptions has a special charm; whatever is far off and suggestive excites our imagination; such pleasures tempt us far more than anything we may daily experience in the narrow circle of sedentary life.” Alexander von Humboldt (Jason Wilson translation)

The first to collect bryophytes in the Tropical Andes in the 19th century were predominately Europeans. Their interests were directed toward natural history in its broadest dimensions, or toward a rather competitive venture in horticulture. The mid 19th century and on marked a change, from naturalist or horticulturist to “professional” botanist, still dominated by Europeans. The presence of North Americans only became apparent at the close of the 19th century. For the first six or seven decades, both Europeans and North Americans were the predominate collectors of bryophytes. Beginning in the 1970’s a significant change occurred, involving the collaboration of Andean institutions with institutions or individuals from the north temperate region, and slight but notable increase on the part of Latin Americans to collect bryophytes. By the close of the 20th century and into the 21st century Latin Americans from the Andes have developed research programs related to bryophytes. The number of new bryophyte collectors and collections from the Tropical Andes has increased dramatically.

The following list provides as many individuals known to have collected bryophytes from tropical Andean countries. This is a “work in progress,” since this enumeration of collectors is an extension of the work presented initially for Colombian mosses (Churchill & Linares C. 1995). The primary sources have been various Andean herbaria, the Missouri Botanical Garden and the New York Botanical Garden. Emphasis is provided for some of the major or historically important collectors and those who published on those collections. The list is alphabetical by collector; in general we have not listed those who have collected with the initial collector; for each country the year of collection is provided and the major political areas (i.e., Departments, Provinces, etc.). Institutions where collections are deposited for reference and research, herbaria have been listed in alphabetical order or the principle herbarium first, followed by herbaria that contain duplicates.

Approximate number of bryophyte collectors for each country from the following list is: Bolivia 99, Colombia 254, Ecuador 70, Peru 72, Venezuela 49.

Contributions to this list have been provided by Susana León–Ynez (QCA) for Ecuador, Yelitza León (MERC) for Venezuela, and Jasmin Opisso (USM) for Peru. Additional collectors, data related to them, and corrections will be made in the future versions. Corrections, suggestions, and additional information are most welcomed.

  • Jameson, William (Scotland, 1796–1873). ECUADOR. 1846–1851; Pichincha. Herbaria: BM, E, FH, NY. The Jameson collections were among the first to significantly characterize the diversity of Andean moss flora. Jameson apparently collected widely in Ecuador, and even southern most Colombia (in the department of Nariño), but most label information is minimal. The following quotes related to Jameson I particularly like.
  • “A tropical sun cannot exhaust his zeal, or enervate his exertions; and his success is measured not more by the multitude than the distinctness of the species he has collected. … The entire must form an important element in ascertaining, at a future period, the just relations of muscological life.” – Thomas Taylor (London J. Bot. 7: 187. 1848).
  • “…Jameson is one of the most amiable of men, an ardent collector (for other people – much the same as I have been), and a very fair botanist and mineralogist. But what can a poor fellow do who has had a drunken (and worse) wife hanging on him for forty years, who burns his dried plants, whenever she can get hold of them, so that he can keep no herbarium, and who has often had to struggle with absolute what?” R. Spruce.

  • Lechler, Willibald (Germany, 1814–1856). PERU: 1852; Puno. Herbaria: BR, NY, PC. Several mosses have now been recorded for Chile, collected by Lechler, that are typically montane forest species found in the Tropical Andes, e.g., Hypopterygium tamarisci, Lepidopilum erectiusculum, and Racopilum tomentosum. Given that there are no modern collections of any of these species from Chile, or any known “montane” equivalent environment in Chile, these and possibly other collections were likely a result of mislabeling. Lechler did collect in Argentina, Chile and Peru.

Indeed the article published in Linnaea by E. Hampe in 1847 – “Ein Refert über die columbischen Moose, welche von Herrn Moritz gesammelt wurden” refers to Colombia, but that is likely in reference to Gran Colombia, when Panama, Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador were united.

Schultes was the first significant collector of bryophytes in the Colombian Amazon; many of the collections were made with Isidoro Cabrera. Schultes provided the following comments (letter to SPC, 5 May 1988) about collecting Amazonian bryophytes in the 1950’s: “I used to collect mosses (of which I know next to nothing) whilist awaiting a Colombian military plane to fetch me out – one wait stretched to nearly 60 days! Since mosses are easy to prepare and my formaldehyde for higher plants was all used up, I turned to the bryophytes.” There are at NY (and probably other herbaria) about 15–20 Schultes collections from Amazonia that contain Andean taxa and were surely mislabeled. • Spruce, Richard (England, 1817–1893). COLOMBIA: 1854; Vichada ECUADOR. Chimborazo, Pastaza. PERU. Herbaria: BM, G, NY; E, US. The only region in Colombia visited by Spruce appears to be Maypures = Maipures, in Vichada, 19 June to at least 1 July, 1854 (see Huber & Wurdack, 1984). The Spruce collections in general contain little specific locality information on the labels, and no dates. Most collections are numbered, but not all; and the sequence of numbering largely, but not entirely, is based on recognized taxonomic enumeration given in Mitten (1869).
  •             The preeminent individual of the 19th century was Richard Spruce with regard to South American plant collectors. The combination of “bryologist”, collector, and author was not to be matched by any other person in the Neotropics for nearly 50 years. The moss collections summarized by Spruce in 1867, Catalogus muscorum fere omnium quos in terris amazonicis et andinis per annos 1849–1860 enumerates 1518 entries. There are in this list 38 additional collections that repeat a number but lettered, e.g., Schistidium “132. saxatile Mitt.” followed by “132c. Andinum, Mitt.”, thus the total number is 1556. The number of species recognized by Spruce is less than this number, for example nine different collections of Mnium rostratum (= Plagiomnium rhynchophorum) are listed. The total number of collections, 1556, would seem to represent very few moss collections given the time period involved, ca. 12 years. Spruce, however, was largely occupied with collecting, preparing, and transporting vascular plants back to England, which paid in part needed funds to continue work in South America, and to have some secured funds on his return to England. The bryophytes, however, were the special interest and concern for Spruce, and although not great in number, his collections were unmatched both in diversity and geography for that time. In fact, it is also likely that the number of bryophytes collected by Spruce were unmatched for the 19th century. See: Seaward, M.R.D. & S.M.D. Fitzgerald (eds.). 1996.
