Description Solitary massive palm. Stem to 15 m tall, ca. 35 cm. Trunk eventually bare, with warty lumps, pale grey brown, very obscurely ringed. Crown of ca. 20 marcescent leaves. Leaf entire, spectacular when young, becoming tattered with age; leaf at base bright green, ca. 60 cm long, with two basals auricles; blade in mature individuals ca. 3.5 m long, in juveniles to 5 m; rachis covered in white indumentum abaxially, adaxially glabrous, leaf tip subpraemose. Infloresence hidden among the leaf bases, staminate or pistillate on same tree, peduncle 50 cm; peduncular bract and prophyll membranous. very young fruit pink, becoming green.
Locality Maroantsetra: Andranofotsy river, Sahavary, hills east of village, swamp at headwaters of Sahafotra river. Upland swamp forest in valley bottom, cleared area nearly encroaching on the population. Population ca. 50 individuals. Collected with D.N. Cooke, A. Rakotozafy, J.H. Beach, P. P. Lowry, G. Jean
